De nachtwacht

A life-size replica

Have you ever wanted to touch De Nachtwacht and practically stand in the painting itself? This is your chance! Our brasserie is home to a life-sized replica of this famous work of art by Rembrandt van Rijn.

Fun facts:

– The name of the painting known as De Nachtwacht – The Night watch – is not its real name. Its official name is ‘De compagnie van kapitein Frans Banninck Cocq en luitenant Willem van Ruytenburgh maakt zich gereed om uit te marcheren’ – ‘The company of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh prepare to march’

– The painting was given the nickname ‘De Nachtwacht’ because of its dark colours. It was only after the painting was cleaned in the 1940s and a layer of varnish that had darkened over the years was removed that it was discovered that the scene played during the day rather than at night.

– The painting used to be larger. During a move in 1715 pieces were removed from three sides of the painting, because it was too large for the wall on which it would be hanging.

– Rembrandt van Rijn also painted himself in it. He painted part of his own face on the centre left side of the painting. Look carefully: between the man with the hat and the man with the helmet.
